The Bass Harbor Head Light Station is located in Tremont, Maine, marking the entrance to Bass Harbor and Blue Hill Bay on the southwest corner of Mount Desert Island. Among about 80 lighthouses across Maine, it is one of three lights managed by Acadia National Park, including two others on Baker Island and Bear Island. It appeared on the America the Beautiful quarter in 2012, the NPS centennial postage stamp in 2016, and was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. Eagle Lake is situated primarily within 23,000 acres of Maine Public Reserved Land near the Town of Eagle Lake, in Maine’s Aroostook County. One of the most remote bodies of water in the Fish River chain, Eagle Lake covers 5,581 acres with a maximum water depth of 136 feet. The lake is noted primarily for its outstanding brook trout, lake trout and landlocked salmon angling and is one of few Maine lakes that offers hook and line rainbow smelt angling, year-round, in freshwater. The spectacular waves and crashing sounds of the ocean at Thunder Hole draw many visitors to this dramatic location. You need luck and timing to best experience the thunderous sounds which occur when the waves crash against the rock and water is forced through a crevice and into a small cave. The sound of thunder is created as rushing water crashes against air trapped inside the cave. The noise is most pronounced 1-2 hours before high tide, or just after a storm.
