The Paine house originally was built around 1691 by Samuel Bennett. Samuel ran a saw mill at this site and it is believed that the house began as a one room shelter. The mode for travel at that time was the Pawtuxet River. The property was passed to his son Samuel and in 1741 the first town meeting and election took place here. For four generations, Christmas trees perfumed the grounds at Leyden Farm & Winery. In 2010, the Leyden family became interested in making their own fruit-essence wines and planted strawberries, blueberries, and grapevines amidst the trees, becoming partners with a love for farming and wine. The fruit from the vines grew eventually becoming red wines such as their Romeo's Red and American Merlot, white wines such as Cleo's Blanc and Sunny's Grigio, or fruit varieties such as Apple Jack Russell, and Samson's Wild Berry. Today, visitors to the family farm can enjoy bites of cheese and crackers complemented by tastes of smooth, complex, crisp wines. (Curated content from www.leydenfarm.com)
