America's Stonehenge image
Salem, NH
(range: 8 miles)
Built by a Native American Culture or a migrant European population? No one knows for sure. A maze of man-made chambers, walls and ceremonial meeting places, at over 4,000 years old America's Stonehenge is most likely the oldest man-made construction in the United States. Like Stonehenge in England, America's Stonehenge was built by ancient people well versed in astronomy and stone construction. It has been determined that the site is an accurate astronomical calendar. It was, and still can be, used to determine specific solar and lunar events of the year. (This excerpt taken from the America's Stonehenge website)
Leddy Center produced its first show in July of 1975 as the Epping Community Church Players, in order to raise money to buy the oil needed for the church to hold their services in the sanctuary instead of in the basement of the church. Elaine Gatchell was the choir director of the Epping Community Church then (and now) and continued to produce and direct one show each year to raise money not only for the church but for many organizations within the town such as the Ambulance Fund, and the Epping Fire Department. (This excerpt taken from the Leddy Center for the Performing Arts website)
